Catchment Market Service Design

A multi-disciplinary team of specialists has been commissioned by Defra to design and operate the Pilot Nutrient Market for the Solent. The Solent Nutrient Market Consortium is working closely with Defra, Natural England, local planning authorities, Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities, the Environment Agency and the Forestry Commission to develop a market that helps landowners get paid a fair price for nature-based projects and ensures developers can access value-for-money environmental credits.

The Solent Nutrient Market Pilot is testing the use of an online nutrient trading platform EnTrade to ...

-   Support landowners to make long-term land-use changes in the Test and Itchen Catchment that reduce nitrogen pollution and deliver wider environmental benefits
-   Enable new developments to meet the requirement to deliver Nutrient Neutrality on protected sites.

The Solent Nutrient Market Consortium brings together a team of experts in market design and operation, environmental land management, landowner engagement and communications. Consortium members include EnTrade, Arcadian Ecology, Arup, The University of Exeter, Wheatley Young Partners.

The Service Design project concluded with three outputs in addition to this report.

- Market Process Map
- Service Blueprint
- Project Supplier
- Service Blueprint
- Credit Buyer

These outputs were designed on Miro boards so that they can continue to serve as living documents, evolving as the service evolves.

Additionally, the project has resulted in a series of recommendations for the service, categorised into 1. Communications, 2. Platform, 3. Service, as well as Design Principles to apply to the design of the platform.
